Hurricane Tomas
Hurricane Tomas
On Saturday 30 October, 2010, Saint Lucia received a direct hit from Hurricane Tomas which had a devastating impact on the social and economic fabric of the country.
The NCF is continuing its role in terms of recovery in the lives of those affected by this disaster. NCF is also working with NEMO, St Lucia Red Cross, RISE St Lucia and St Lucia Social Development Fund in terms of the identification and short listing of victims in the various communities.
- As is customary with NCF operations in a post disaster period families affected were provide with personal household items like cooking pots, cutlery, bed linen, toiletries and other hygiene products.
- Some of our annual scholarship students lost their educational supplies so the NCF will replace these educational supplies. The NCF currently has 128 students on its annual scholarship programme, however, the number of students affected as a result of this hurricane expands beyond these numbers. NCF will provide assistance to some of these students and schools as well.
- Given the severity of this disaster the NCF would like to collaborate with other local, regional and international nongovernmental organizations to assist with the re-construction efforts of these families.
On December 14, Caribbean Youth Fest 2010, an annual youth showcase made a presentation of $10,000 to the NATIONAL COMMUNITY FOUNDATION (NCF), representing 50% of the $20,000 contribution that Youth Fest 2010, its Sponsors, Artistes and Patrons will be donating to HURRICANE TOMAS REHABILITATION through the NCF. The donation will allow NCF to provide educational assistance to schools and students affected by the hurricane.
